CPCS card explained: red or blue, the tests and how to renew
A CPCS card proves you can operate a type of plant — a dumper, an excavator, a telehandler. You start with the red Trained Operator card (HS&E test, then a CPCS theory and practical test for the machine) and move to the blue Competent Operator card once you have the NVQ. The red card lasts 2 years, the blue one 5.
Fees from the CPCS scheme site (NOCN Job Cards), checked October 2026. Theory and practical test prices are set by each test centre — ask a few. CPCS helpline: 0300 999 1177.
How to get your first CPCS card (red)
Pass a Health, Safety & Environment test
Either the CPCS Operative test (booked online) or the CITB HS&E test — the same “touch screen test” you take for CSCS. Most plant categories need the Operatives level. See the CITB test explained.
Pass the CPCS theory test
At a CPCS accredited test centre, for the machine category you want, within 2 years of the HS&E test.
Pass the CPCS practical test
At the test centre, within 6 months of the theory test and within 2 years of the HS&E test.
The centre applies for your card
You don't apply yourself — the test centre sends the application. You get the red Trained Operator card for that category.
Red or blue: what's the difference?
| Card | What it shows | You need | Lasts | Renewal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red — Trained Operator | You're trained on the machine and still building experience | HS&E + CPCS theory + practical test | 2 years from the practical test | No — upgrade to blue or extend |
| Blue — Competent Operator | You can work unsupervised and supervise red card holders | The red card + an NVQ/SVQ for the category | 5 years | Yes, from 3 months before expiry |
Categories you add later to a blue card share the first card's expiry date.
From red to blue
Register on the NVQ for your category
While you work on the red card, sign up for a relevant NVQ (SVQ in Scotland) with a training provider. It's assessed on the work you do with the machine.
Pass the NVQ
Keep your HS&E test in date — it must be passed within the 2 years before you apply.
Apply for the upgrade — £30
Send your NVQ certificate to CPCS. The blue card is valid for 5 years.
If your red card is still in date, or expired no more than 12 months ago, and you're registered on a relevant NVQ, you can get a 12-month extension for £30: email proof of your NVQ registration to CPCS@nocn.org.uk, then call 0300 999 1177. Expired for longer, or not on an NVQ? You'd retake the HS&E, theory and practical tests for a new 2-year red card.
Renewing a blue CPCS card
Check the timing
You can apply from 3 months before the expiry date. The renewed card runs 5 years from the old expiry date, so renewing early costs you nothing.
HS&E test in date
Passed within the last 2 years.
CPCS renewal CPD
An online module — about 40 minutes, on a phone or computer, English only. £30 covers up to 5 categories, including the card. Your employer can pay.
Prove you still operate
Either logbook hours (300 per category over the 5 years, using the CPCS digital or paper logbook), an on-site assessment, a CPCS practical test, or an NVQ taken in the last 2 years.
Send the renewal form
Apply online at renew-cpcs.nocn.org or with form F1/3. The card isn't renewed automatically — the form is what triggers it.
Other situations
“My blue card expired a while ago”
You can still renew up to 5 years after expiry, with the same requirements. Categories you can't renew can be “banked”, as long as at least one category is renewed. After 5 years you start again: HS&E, theory and practical tests — and without an NVQ you'd get a red card.
“I got my blue card on experience”
Blue cards gained without an NVQ (grandfather rights or industry accreditation) are no longer renewed as they were. CPCS offers a Competence Interview — call the helpline to see which route applies to you.
“I want to add another machine”
Each category is tested separately: theory and practical test at a CPCS centre. Adding an endorsement to a category you already hold needs the practical test only.
“I lost my card”
A duplicate card costs £30 — call the CPCS helpline on 0300 999 1177.
Graftum Pocket keeps a photo of your CSCS, CPCS and other cards and reminds you months before each one expires. Free, in 7 languages.
Add my cards — 2 minutesCommon questions
What is the CITB CPCS test?
It's usually the Health, Safety & Environment test you must pass before the CPCS theory and practical tests. CPCS accepts either its own CPCS Operative test or the CITB HS&E test, and most plant categories need the Operatives level.
How long does a CPCS red card last?
Each category on a red Trained Operator card lasts 2 years from the date you passed the practical test. It can't be renewed — you upgrade to blue with an NVQ, or extend it for 12 months if you're registered on an NVQ.
How long does a CPCS blue card last?
5 years. You can renew it from 3 months before it expires, and the new card runs 5 years from the old expiry date.
How do I upgrade my CPCS red card to blue?
Achieve an NVQ (or SVQ) for that category, have an HS&E test passed within the last 2 years, and apply to CPCS with your certificate. The fee is £30.
How much does a CPCS renewal cost?
The online renewal CPD costs £30 for up to 5 categories, including the new card. You also need a valid HS&E test and proof you still operate — logbook hours, an on-site assessment or a practical test.
Can I extend my CPCS red card?
Yes, for 12 months, if the card is in date or expired less than 12 months ago and you're registered on a relevant NVQ. It costs £30 through the CPCS helpline.
How much do the CPCS theory and practical tests cost?
There's no fixed price — each CPCS test centre sets its own, and availability varies. Ask several centres before you book.
Is CPCS the same as NPORS?
No. They're two different plant operator card schemes. Many sites accept either, but some main contractors ask for CPCS — check the job ad before you pay for training.
