Renew your ECS card yourself — straight on MyECS

Even the official ECS website warns: never pay a third party or agent — they just add their own fee on top of the same form. Here's the do-it-yourself route.

The real cost, doing it yourself
ECS HS&E assessment (only if you need it)£57.00
ECS card renewal — online via MyECS£46.20
Total — official, all in£103.20

Prices from the JIB's January 2025 fee review (£47.50+VAT / £38.50+VAT), checked August 2026. The JIB reviews ECS fees every January — always confirm on ecscard.org.uk. Many electricians are EXEMPT from the assessment through recent qualifications (check the official exemptions list) — then it's only the renewal fee. Discounts exist for Unite members and JIB-member employers.

The 4 steps

1

Register on MyECS

Renewal is done online in your MyECS account on ecscard.org.uk. You can renew up to 6 months before your card expires. MyECS also shows messages specific to your card — for example if the criteria changed.

2

Check your card's requirements

The criteria for some cards have changed, so check you still meet the requirements for yours (Card Types section). Have scans or photos (PDF/JPEG) of any new qualifications ready to upload — without proof, the card can't be renewed.

3

Sort the Health & Safety requirement — £57 or free

You need a valid ECS HS&E assessment OR an exemption. Check the official exemptions list first — many recent qualifications count, and then this step costs nothing. If you do need the assessment, book it through MyECS (remote invigilation from home) or a partner centre.

4

Renew in MyECS — and avoid agents

Pay the renewal fee online in MyECS and track progress there. The ECS site itself says it plainly: do not pay additional fees — no third party or agent is needed. In Scotland, applications go through the SJIB (sjib.org.uk).

🎓 Want to move up — towards the Gold card?
